With all the excitement in the last week around the 2015 Fabri-Quilt New Block Blog Hop I haven’t had a chance to share some photos I took last weekend. It was so hot last weekend so we thought we’d take a day and escape to the mountains. But even at 10,480 feet it was still HOT!!! We drove up to Brainard Lake which is west of Boulder and so pretty. The lake sits in a glacial valley and it’s pretty common to see moose there. No moose to be seen though as it was so hot. Still it was fun to watch the kayakers and the doggies all have fun in the water.
I also managed to remember to take along the mini quilt I made for the Text Me Mini Quilt swap. The guidelines for the project was that it had to be at least 12″ on any one side and not more than 24″ and we had to use at least 2 fabrics that have text, letters or numbers on them. When thinking about what I wanted to make for the Text Me Mini Quilt swap I remembered seeing this sewing machine cover. This quickly became the inspiration for this mini quilt. I thought it would be fun to incorporate the word Sew on top of fabrics with words. So that is where I started. Along the way I thought about the flying geese and the feathers in the inspiration piece and wanted to incorporate those ideas but realized I most likely wouldn’t have room if I included the spools. I especially wanted to include the spools to carry out the sewing theme. Instead, I was able to include some plus blocks.
This was an interesting project for me, I didn’t use any patterns other than the spool of thread pattern from Lori Holt’s Farm Girl Vintage book. I did do a lot of math to make sure my impromptu piecing would come together in a quilt top that measured 24″ x 24″. I thought it would be fun to name this quilt, “Sew Many Words”. This was a fun project for me that challenged me out of my normal color palette and allowed me to be a little free with some improv sewing which I’ve never really done. My partner Amy seems to really like this quilt.
